VMware WS doesn't start anymore and gives the following error message after using the VMware-any-any-update-116:
process XXXX: Attempt to remove filter function 0xXXXXXXXX user data 0xXXXXXXX, but no such filter has been added
D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace

I found there more then one solution but there was just one solution working for me. I had to start the 'hald'.
/etc/init.d/hald start

After starting it, the WMware WS starts perfectly :-).

User login didn't work anymore ;-D
Sunday, March 9, 2008, 07:45 PM - Linux
Yesterday I wanted to change the permissions of the 'known_host' file in my (users) ssh directory.
Something went wrong, don't ask me what, but it was impossible to login with any users (root worked fine).
When I tried to login with one user (e.g. testuser) I got the message:
Unable to cd to '/home/testuser/'

I tried directly from the console and also via root's 'su' command, but nothing did the right job. After investigating a long time for searching via google, I found only one way to get it working again.

The problem was my permission on the whole system were wrong. I don't know how, but I changed unawares all my permissions on my system to 644, also the permission of the root directory ('/').
I changed it back to 755 (also the root directory rights) and after that the login was possible again.

Gentoo on my Notebook :-)
Sunday, March 2, 2008, 04:26 PM - Linux
Hi folks,

During the last days I installed Gentoo on my notebook. For me it was the only way to get Linux running on it, because I have an unsupported SATA2 device, which is not supported by default from Debian. So I tried to find a Linux LiveCD which supports my SATA2 chip and install Gentoo by using the stage3 installation :-).

It was not easy for me to get it running, because it's not so simple, let me say, as Debian. There are a some things which are different to Debian. But I had someone for supporting me :-P.

Now Gentoo is running fine with all the included hardware.

I suggest you to use Gentoo. At the beginning it seems to be a very difficult OS, but in reality after 1 or 2 weeks, it's quiet simple when you already have expiriences with Linux (e.g. Debian).
But please be sure that you have a fast internet connection and a lot of time *smile*. A simple installation with KDEbase and KDM included on a middle-rate hardware takes up to 8 hours.

So now I will enjoy my Sunday :-).

LLMC - Linux LISCON Management Console
Friday, February 22, 2008, 11:57 AM - LISCON
I am using the LMC under Linux. I thought it will quiet simple to set it up. But no, it wasn't!
So far I know, I am one of three users who uses the LMC under Linux --> great!
All Liscon images are modified Linux images and most of the other customers uses the LMC under Windows, so I can't understand this but ok, we have to accept that.

When you also want to run the LMC under Linux, please be informed and warned that it's not really simple and easy without any support or experience with Linux and LMC. But for the first thing read the documentation on the LISCON-Wiki.
Here are some tips to get it running (from my experiences):
-install a mysql database
-create a database for the lmc
-grant all privileges on this database for the user what you want to use

-modify the settings.sh in the installation folder of lmc
-set the right ROOT for the lmc
-when you have java installed in the Linux machine (it's recommended) comment the line with JAVA_HOME out

-copy the start parameter from the start.sh (it's something like java -Xm...) and start the lmc on the console with an & at the end

This should work for you. When I got more experiences or knows more about some troubleshooting I wil post it here. If you have some more experiences or questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

LISCON TCs - No username for SSH sessions
Thursday, February 21, 2008, 03:32 PM - LISCON
When you add a SSH session in the Control Center, you only can give them fixed usernames and that's not logical why I can't use my own username. It was possible to enter your own username for the SSH session in the old version.
LSCON will add this 'feature' ;-) again in the next relase.
