Last weekend I had to reinstall my workstation, because my SATA HDD crashed. I installed the Debian Netinst 4.0 r0 from www.debian.org.Netinst is a small an base version of Debian Etch 4.0. There are only base packages, like vi, make, apt-get, and so on without a graphical interface (there is just a CLI (command line interface)).
At first I installed some packages from an internet apt-source to compile my own kernel (2.6.22.5 at this time), to get a GUI (graphical user interface), and some more packages.
Package list:
vim
libncurses5-dev
make
gcc
tar
bzip2
ssh
xserver-xorg
xfonts-75dpi
xfonts-100dpi
xfonts-base
For the next step I installed the KDE but just the base version. I didn't want to have a lot of packages installed which I wont use in the future.
kdebase
kdebase-dev
kdm
I also use NTFS HDD so I installed a NTFS driver for writting support and I also needed a printer management console (cups)
cupsys
fuse
captive-ntfs
My workstation is also used as a small server just for the intranet. Here I uses these packages.
apache-ssl
libphp-apache
mysql
phpmyadmin
samba
smbfs
screen
sendmail
Instead of a MS Office on a Windows I use OpenOffice.org for Linux and some other applications.
adobe reader
openoffice.org
firefox
java
flashplayer
thunderbird
ark
xmms
xmms-agent
xmms-arts
k3b
vlc
mplayer
kmix
kradio
xawtv
gimp
kwireless-tools
wireless-tools
Last but not least for some chat messengers I use different packages.
amsn
kopete
skype
Now there should be a small office workstation with some server functions fully functional.
